RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.
RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."
Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
