Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
