The Trump movement's most illuminating and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the American president commenced revealing the public his designs for an ornate dance hall twice the size than the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing to erect it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the current estimate of casualties from his cuts to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and recently an analysis projected his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – solo demolishing major areas of the White House to build a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, the majority of whom conduct transactions with the government.
We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the world' to 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'
As confusing as it is to watch the chief executive attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this change developed more gradually, across decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus that I grew up with, because theoretically Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group of Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him as they consider themselves atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; however I believe that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly absolutely not the narrative of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, an infant arrives to displaced parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to avoid secret police. The infant develops in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine is about love for other people, particularly for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and housing. Christ's response to violence is to offer the opposite cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a way to educate the attacker; his crime policy indicates that whenever a person pilfers your jacket you should give them your pullover also.
The obvious and straightforward truth that Christ from scripture requests a form of radical love centered on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be restrained. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down – Protestantism was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Finest of Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to observe the persistent defiance to Trump develop in this past year. It has been great solace to assist in constructing the campaign that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated voters to participate in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags during all protests and requests to the finest aspects in US history.

America is best defended, in other words, through connection to the finest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by reference to what makes it special and magnificent, specifically the model of Christ. In all circumstances does it mean acting as if the most negative about the nation and Christian faith was nonexistent; it signifies both modesty and belief, a mixture that serious national faithful ought to accept.
