Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to contest specific rulings from the official, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
